It's very difficult. I often think of Amanda Hocking's classic post from this March (http://amandahocking.blogspot.com/2011/03/some-things-that-need-to-be-said.html) where she described the despair she felt as an indie at all the time lost to marketing her books. As well, I often think of Rick Mofina's guest post on JA Konrath's blog (http://jakonrath.blogspot.com/2011/09/guest-post-by-rick-mofina.html) where he talked about getting up at 3:30 am to write before going to work and writing in airports, on the bus, wherever/whenever. Of course in Mofina's case he has a legacy publisher, but has a full-time job and still needs to find time to WRITE.

There are no easy answers, of course, and only individual answers that fit ourselves. I'd say, though, that the one common denominator is dogged determination. We're writers, and as you say, it's what we do. Ultimately the writing has a higher priority than the marketing. I always say that if I'd wanted to sell stuff, I'd be working in a shoe store.

All the best for 2012!

The Overnight Bestseller
http://michaeljmccannsblog.blogspot.com/Michael J. I can't speak to the traditional reviewers, but I've been waiting patiently for about five months so far for reviews from online book bloggers who accepted e-book copies of Blood Passage for review. Their TBR (To Be Read) piles are enormous. I know people in the legacy publishing world are highly selective/exclusive, but I suspect they're probably buried as well. Patience, I suppose, is a virtue.

Oh yeah, and the next novel in my series is slated for publication in April, and I'm starting to book reviewers now for it, before their dance cards get filled up for 2012!

The Overnight Bestseller
http://michaeljmccannsblog.blogspot.com/Michael J. I used those padded mailer envelopes and because the book and envelope just fit through a measuring slot the post office has, I was able to mail each of them for $2.45 plus tax. However, I just checked and my book is only half the thickness of yours. If your book can fit through the post office's measuring slot by itself, maybe you could wrap it in one thin layer of paper and forego the mailer envelope. I'm guessing though that it will probably still be too thick.

Then again, I mailed a promotional copy of my latest book last year and it only cost me $3 plus tax. I'm sure I used a mailer and that book is about 3/4 the thickness of yours. Maybe there's hope yet. I would phone the post office and ask what the maximum thickness is to avoid package rates. If you're close then just use minimal wrapping.

DaveDave Martinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7200293019171413604.post-67627693078172195052011-07-18T10:34:30.334-07:002011-07-18T10:34:30.334-07:00Hooray! I plan to publish another humor collection at some point so I'll definitely keep Tinhorn in mind.

As for the ISBN question, I opted for the free one through Lulu. I doubt it will cause a problem if, by some fluke, my book gets picked up by a mainstream publisher. I didn't know much about this issue so I did a bit of searching and found this site which seems to be helpful: http://www.publetariat.com/publish/truth-about-createspaces-free-isbns

Just for fun, I checked both versions of Terry Fallis' book "The Best Laid Plans." There's one ISBN for the self-published version (iUniverse) and a different one for the version published by Emblem Editions. At this point, I suspect ISBN issues are not a problem for Mr. Fallis. I did everything on the cheap and opted for ExtendedReach which gave me a listing on Amazon.com and didn't cost anything. On the other hand, if they're hard to get, I don't think it's that big a deal if you don't have any.

For my book, as I recall, the ISBN and the barcode were easy but I think that's because I chose one of Lulu's stock covers.
